Green laning rules (UK) — plain English

This isn’t about being perfect — it’s about being the kind of user that keeps lanes open. Use these rules to reduce conflict, avoid damage, and plan responsibly.

The 10 rules that keep lanes open

1) If in doubt, don’t goUnclear signage, uncertain restriction, poor ground? Choose another route.
2) Go slow, stay calmSpeed and noise create complaints. A polite wave goes a long way.
3) Respect horses and walkersStop or crawl past. Give space. Let people feel safe.
4) Keep groups sensibleSmaller groups reduce impact and draw less attention.
5) Leave gates as you find themOpen/closed matters for livestock. Don’t block access points.
6) Avoid damageIf the surface is getting cut up, turn back. Damage brings closures.
7) Don’t spin wheels for funIt’s the quickest route to getting a lane restricted.
8) Check restrictions (TROs)Restrictions can change overnight. Check before and confirm on arrival.
9) Take your rubbish (and more)Leaving a lane cleaner than you found it builds goodwill.
10) Share updates responsiblyIf you see closures or new signs, report it to your community so others avoid trouble.

When to turn back (no shame)

  • Deep ruts forming or you’re cutting the surface.
  • Waterlogged sections where vehicles are churning it up.
  • Fresh signage you weren’t expecting.
  • Unsafe conditions (visibility, weather, daylight, breakdown risk).

The smartest laners are the ones who turn back early and still have a great day.
